Leadership

3MO1446As CEO of Montgomery Development Group, John Montgomery leads the company’s overall operations, while providing vision and forming strategic partnerships.

As Vice President of Real Estate for Pacolet Milliken Enterprises Inc., Montgomery positioned thousands of acres of properties for future development. In six years with the private, family owned investment company, he spearheaded development efforts that have generated more than $1.6 billion in economic investment in the Southeast – including projects with companies such as Toray Industries, Kobelco Construction Machinery and Bass Pro Shops.

Montgomery continues to manage a portion of Pacolet Milliken’s portfolio, which includes 10,000 acres in the Carolinas and Georgia, including 2,800 of industrial property in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Under the Montgomery Development Group banner, Montgomery also focuses on revitalizing historic properties. In 2009, while at Pacolet Milliken, Montgomery led the master planning and initial redevelopment effort of Drayton Mills Loft Apartments, a 289 luxury apartment project. In February 2016, Montgomery and his partner began redeveloping Drayton Mills Marketplace, a 60,000-square-foot development project at Drayton Mills in Spartanburg, S.C. Once completed, the historic property will include a mix of high-end retail, commercial and dining options. This is part of the overall masterplan for the Drayton community that Montgomery is leading with Pacolet Milliken Enterprises to revitalize the surrounding historic mill village into a traditional neighborhood development. Such developments seek to blend a variety of housing types and various land uses into a walkable community. The overall plan for the Drayton community calls for hundreds of new residential homes, offices, retail space, and a new elementary school, as well as miles of walking trails.

Montgomery’s previous work experience also includes a stint as Spartanburg Market Executive at Carolina First Bank, the largest South Carolina-based commercial bank, which he also worked as Vice President of Corporate Lending.

In addition to his development efforts, Montgomery also works to build a better community. In 2015, he was elected to Chairman of the Commission of Public Works for the City of Spartanburg. He also has served on the leadership boards of numerous community groups, including Converse College, the University of South Carolina Upstate Foundation, the Spartanburg Community College Foundation, the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate, and the Economic Futures Group. Montgomery is a member of the 2017 class of Liberty Fellowship and the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

Montgomery is a graduate of the University of the South, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in European history. He later studied at Columbia University, earning a Master of Science in real estate development. A resident of Spartanburg, S.C., Montgomery is married with four children.
